PS 87 Backpack News: November 18, 2019

From Your PA Presidents

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and that got us thinking about our amazing school community and all of the things we are thankful for.

Here are a few:

-Fun moms who like to hang out together. Join us at Mom’s Night Out, Tuesday Nov. 19, 7-10 p.m. at Da Capo (322 Columbus Ave).

-PS 87 Dads are pretty cool too!  Dad’s Night Out is happening Thursday Nov. 21, 7-10 p.m. at Blondie’s (212 W 79th Street).

The best party on the Upper West Side… the PS 87 Auction! We are taking 87 back to ’78 on March 28. If you want to get involved, join the Auction chairs at the Wine and Cheese volunteer kickoff event this Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m. (email for location).

-We love books! Last week’s Book Fair was a HUGE success. A special thanks to our chairs and to all of the generous families who bought gift certificates for our classrooms and library.

-PIZZA! If you give to PS 87 before Giving Tuesday (December 3) you can win a pizza party for your child’s class!! Check out for more info.

-Finally, we are thankful for the PA Board, committee members and other volunteers who work tirelessly to make our school a better place for our kids.

Thank you,

Jenny and Cheryl

Shop, Save & Earn Money for PS 87

PS 87 has partnered with Jack Rogers to offer families a chance to shop, save and earn.  From now until December 31, when you shop Jack Rogers online or in-store, you will save 10% and PS 87 will receive 10%. Simply use the code JRP87 at checkout. Visit Jack Rogers at, and share the code with friends and family!

And, don’t forget the other ways to shop and earn. Fairway has always been a wonderful partner of PS 87.  As you shop for Thanksgiving and the December Holidays, please use your Fairway Partners Card to earn cash for PS 87 on every purchase.  If you need a card, stop by Officer Ayala’s desk.  These donations all add up and make a real impact on our kids’ experience at school.

The Culture & Community Committee

We are the Culture and Community Committee. We host 5 celebrations a year (thanks to all who came out to our International Dinner Dance back in September!). Rich in culture, these celebrations are open to the entire PS 87 community, and are a great way to celebrate the diversity of our student body and our community at large. These events are a ton of fun for both adults and kids, and best of all, they are FREE of charge!

Our upcoming events (always held on Friday nights, starting at 6:30 p.m.):

-Winter Holiday Festival (December 13, 2019)

-Black History Celebration (February 7, 2020)

-Pan Asian Celebration (April 3, 2020)

-Fiesta Latina (June 19, 2020)

These events are made possible through parent volunteers, so if you would like to get involved, please join us! There are performance opportunities for both kids and parents at most of these events, so if you would like to be a part of a performance or the behind the scenes crew (including helping with the potluck dinners), please email us at

Lastly, many thanks to all our amazing teachers, staff and administration who help make our events happen.

Top 10 Reasons Thanksgiving is my Favorite Holiday

  • A PS 87 Parent
  1. Pie
  2. It’s a very specific North American holiday – unique to U.S. and Canada (although Canadian Thanksgiving was celebrated on October 14)
  3. At least one day a year, thinking about what I’m grateful for is good for framing the whole year
  4. Hand-traced turkeys make me feel like a budding artist
  5. Last of the crunchy leaves under my feet on a chilly morning
  6. Spending time with my family in whatever shape it comes
  7. Pie (so many varieties, it deserves a second mention)
  8. Creating a menu around all our family favorites and some new adventures
  9. The Thanksgiving tradition of a family movie (we aren’t a football family)
  10. Watching the parade while making and nibbling on pie
