From Your PA Presidents
Can you believe this is the last Backpack News of 2019?!
With the new year right around the corner, many people are already making their resolutions. If you are sick of making promises you can’t keep, like working out, eating right, or not yelling at your kids, you are not alone! Don’t worry, we came up with a few resolutions that may be a little easier to stick to:
- Attend more than one PA meeting (the next meeting is January 10!).
- Wear your PS 87 gear on the 87th day of school.
- Expose yourself to different traditions at one of our Culture & Community events (the Black History Celebration is February 6).
- Show off your talent at Broadway Night March 7 and at Rock Night on May 1.
- Party with your fellow parents at the Auction on March 28.
- Volunteer at the Spring Fair on May 30.
- Get your Father’s Day gifts at the Book Fair, the weekend of June 19.
- And, if you really want to get in shape in 2020, get a jump start at Family Fit Night on January 31!
Happy New Year!
- Jenny and Cheryl
Think Auction This Holiday!
With the holidays coming up, we ask you to keep PS 87 and the auction in mind (and maybe a form on hand) as you shop in local stores and celebrate in local restaurants. All information and forms can be found on the main website. It’s all for the enrichment of our kids!
We’ve extended our early bird donation contest! You now have the holiday break to gather those donations! Submit by January 10, and you’ll automatically be entered to win a gift card from a local business..
Are you a business owner interested in sponsoring the auction? We have a lot of ways to participate!
Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.

From the Green Team
Lost & found items & lunchware sale:
Lost & Found items will be displayed outside the main entrance or in the school lobby during publishing parties (December 13 to December 20). On your way to and from your parties, take a quick look to see if any of your child’s items are there. When not in the lobby, the found items are held in the auditorium’s lost & found area. Weather permitting, the Green Team will also sell PS 87 water bottles and environmentally friendly lunchware outside the main entrance at drop-off during these days.
Green reusable plates for publishing parties:
Remember that the school has dishwasher safe plastic cups, plates and utensils to use during the publishing parties. They can be found outside Sandra’s office. A volunteer brings a set to the parties and takes the items home to wash afterwards. Return clean and completely dry as soon as possible, preferably the following day, as a lot of publishing parties are taking place this time of the year. In addition, please ensure that no one throws them away during your party by mistake. For more info, ask your class parents or email the Green Team at pa-greenteam@PS87.info.
Earn Money for PS 87 this Holiday
Modell’s is offering PS 87 families a chance to save and earn from now until January 2. Shop in the store with this coupon for savings of 15% off plus 5% back for PS 87.
Jack Rogers has a beautiful selection of shoes and accessories and is offering PS 87 friends and families 10% off as well as 10% back to the school when they shop from now until December 31. Simply use the code JRPS87.
Stationery and Toy World has been a longtime partner of PS 87’s. Please make sure that when you shop there, you let them know that you are from PS 87. They write down our school’s spending and send us a check. Stationery and Toy World is a true mom and pop, neighborhood store. We are so grateful to have them as a partner.
Finally, PS87 is no longer working with Amazon. Instead we encourage families to shop locally and support our neighbors.
PS 87 Construction Update
The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) has advised us that a construction project will soon begin at PS 87 on the school’s exterior walls, parapets (roof walls), windows and roof. In the next few weeks, a protective sidewalk shed and scaffolding will be erected around the school and construction will begin. In addition, a PlaNYC Boiler Conversion project will also take place in the school. A temporary boiler will be located on the street outside the school building during the boiler work.
For information about the timeline, working hours, and safety procedures regarding asbestos removal, please see the letter from the SCA that was sent out via email by Sandra Guirguis on Friday Dec. 6. If you have questions or want more information, please reach out to Steven Tuozzolo, the Project Support Manager from the SCA, at (718) 752-5226.
To foster holiday creativity and community, BPN requested your help in rewriting the song The 12 Days of Christmas. The new song is titled The 12 Days of December. Here is the full version of The 12 Days of December. Thanks to the parents who contributed to the lyrics. Happy Holidays!
On the first day of December, my true love gave to me, a bandage for my achy knee.
On the second day of December, my true love gave to me, 2 café mochas.
On the 3rd Day of December, my true love gave to me, 3 Bic pens.
On the 4th day of December my true love gave to me, 4 birthday cards.
On the 5th day of December my true love gave to me, 5 gold earrings.
On the 6th day of December my true love gave to me, 6 train delaying.
On the 7th day of December my true love gave to me, 7 kids- a-swimming.
On the 8th day of December my true love gave to me, 8 taxis honking.
On the 9th day of December my true love gave to me, 9 people running.
On the 10th day of December, my true love gave to me 10 legs a-lunging.
On the 11th day of December, my true love gave to me, 11 fingers poking.
