PS 87 Backpack News: February 10, 2020

Dear Families,

February’s book of the month is How to Be a Lion by Ed Vere.  How to Be a Lion is the story of a lion named Leonard who does not fit the fierce image that many of us have of lions.  He is a gentle soul who likes to sit on his “thinking hill” pondering life and creating poems. He becomes close friends with a duck named Marianne who also likes to write poems. Instead of eating Marianne, which is what one would expect him to do, he spends quality time with her, walking, talking, and star gazing. One day, Leonard is confronted by other lions.  They want to know why he hasn’t eaten his duck companion. He lets the pack know that the duck is named Marianne and that they are friends. The pack then tells Leonard that he isn’t acting like a lion because he wasn’t fierce. After this interaction, Leonard writes a poem:

I’ll say this quietly;

I needn’t roar to be heard

I can be a friend

To a bee or a bird.

You said I must change, I must chomp Marianne,

But chomping your friends is a terrible plan.

Let nobody say

Just one way is true.

There are so many ways

That you can be you.

If there must be a must,

Then this we must try…

Why don’t you, be you

And I, will be I.

Many of us are asked to conform to the ideas of what others think we should be. It takes a very courageous person to go against what is considered the norm. Being true to yourself is not always easy, but in the end you always end up feeling better about yourself, and others admire you for being an individual.
