Our March book of the month is Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. Many of you may remember a prior book of the month entitled One by the same author. Much like One, Zero teaches us an important lesson through number characters.
The main character of this book is Zero. Zero compares herself to other numbers and begins to feel low. She is able to see the value of all of the other numbers and begins to think, “But how could a number worth nothing become something?” This sentiment makes Zero feel “empty inside.” As the story goes on, we see Zero try to change into other numbers. She stretches herself out to try to be just like One. She twists herself into loops to try to become like Eight. Finally, Seven shares some wise words with her. “Every number has value… be open. You’ll find a way.” And with those words, Zero figures out that not only does she have value, but by being herself she “bring[s] more value to everyone.”
This simple story teaches us that we need to recognize that we are all valuable members of our community. We all need to know our worth and that no one person has a greater value than another. Because of this, we should always be ourselves and not try to become someone else. Being true to yourself adds value to the lives of others around you. We must all know and believe that we all bring something to the table that makes our community great.

Rock Night 2020 – Friday May 1
Calling all Auction Swap Volunteers!
As some of you may know, to help staff our Auction each year, PS 87 swaps volunteers with some of our neighboring elementary schools. This way each school has a full volunteer “staff” to help with check-ins, coat checks, or whatever they might need – and the parents at the school can have some fun and bid, bid, bid!! Our friends at Anderson and PS 199 have their auctions coming up, so we need a few volunteers on February 29 and March 7! Please click here to access the sign up genius and pick your preferred date and time. Help us pay it forward!
