PS87 Backpack News: February 22, 2021

Welcome Back!

Dear Families,

We hope you all had a restful break. Daylight is lasting longer which means spring is on its way. March is just around the corner. With it comes PS 87 March Madness! This is a chance to get our bodies moving again. It’s also an opportunity to get outside and walk or run with family and friends (distanced of course). Do we have your attention? More to come shortly.

Wellness in the School Family Workshops

Dear PS87 Community,

On Wednesday, February 24 from 4-5 p.m., I will be hosting the first of ten Wellness in the Schools Family Workshops which will take place every other week until mid-May.  Each week’s class will have a different nutrition lesson and a simple, accessible recipe to make together.  The theme, recipe, and shopping list will be provided in advance.

Join Zoom Meeting

Meeting ID: 926 2513 7223

Passcode: AMC3fu

During our first session we will discuss herbs and spices which are the surest way to make even the simplest tasting food our own! We’ll learn the difference between herbs and spices, discuss some we all have in our own kitchens and then use a couple favorites to make Baked Buffalo Cauliflower Bites!

Here you will find the shopping and equipment list, as well as a safety and prep sheet for consideration in advance.

Please prepare for the Zoom by washing hands and getting the ingredients and equipment ready.  If you’d like to purchase a child-friendly knife for this class and/or future workshops, we recommend lettuce knives or child friendly nylon serrated knives which can be found online, at Bed, Bath and Beyond and local gourmet food stores.

Looking forward to our time together!

Be well,

Chef Victoria Baluk

Schoolwide Art Project

Hello PS 87 Families,

You should already have received an email from your class parents telling you about the school-wide art project going on through March 1.  Each student has been assigned a square to replicate – all of the squares will be put together to create a final masterpiece.

Click here to track progress and for printable instructions!. If you do not know your child’s square, you can email auctionclassprojects@ps87.info.

We want everyone to participate, so please talk it up with your class!

March PS 87 Family Book Club – Monday March 1

The March selection for our Family Book Club is Freedom Summer, written by Deborah Wiles and illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue. The book tells the story of two best friends of different skin colors, confronting the changes (or lack thereof) in the desegregating south.

A video of Dawnica’s read aloud is posted on the PS 87 website: https://site.ps87.info/

For those who would like to read it themselves, copies are available to borrow from the New York Public Library, or to purchase from neighborhood and online booksellers.

As mentioned previously, the featured titles for the Family Book Club will be picture books that take on topics of race, equity and inclusion – issues that we hope will promote a lot of discussion around the dinner table, as well as in our meetings.

The books will be able to speak to the majority of our students, but will be most accessible to 1st-5th graders.

All participants – including parents – should read or listen to the book before coming to the book club meeting on Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m.

PS 87 Spring Fundraiser April 24 – Help Wanted!

Never has the PS 87 motto of “One Family Under the Sun” felt more fitting than this year. In that spirit, we ask for your help as our big spring fundraising event takes shape.

This year, we will merge a few of PS 87’s favorite celebrations into one event — a little bit of a show and a little bit of a fundraiser — for an evening of Fun Under the Sun Cabaret, taking place on Saturday, April 24! Our typical fundraising events — Harvest Fest, Broadway Night, Rock Night, Spring Fair and the Auction — are on hold for this year, but that won’t stop us from coming together in a virtual yet creative way. The past year has been hard on all of us, but Fun Under the Sun will celebrate the strength and diversity of our community while also raising much-needed funds.

This event is 100% parent-run, so in order to make it happen, we need your help! Volunteering is a great way to bond with fellow parents and feel more connected to the school. Click here to see what’s needed and sign up — no amount of time or talent is too small! And if you like to get involved in a different way, please consider joining our Fundraising event committee. Email pa-president@ps87.info to join the team and help PS 87!

Action Needed: 87Afterschool Families

Since 87Afterschool has been put on pause due to Covid-19, the PA executive board has been discussing the future of our school’s after school program.  We need more parent involvement in our Afterschool Committee, especially from parents of children who have attended 87Afterschool in the past and will need to register their children in Afterschool once it is back up and running. I am particularly requesting that parents of children in K through 2nd grade consider volunteering. Also, if you have a legal, accounting, finance, business, or HR background, your expertise could be helpful. We meet weekly on Zoom. If you are interested in joining the committee or would like more information, please reach out to me directly. If you have questions and would like to learn more, I am here to help.
