March PS 87 Family Book Club – Monday March 1 (Tonight!)
The March selection for our Family Book Club is Freedom Summer, written by Deborah Wiles and illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue. The book tells the story of two best friends of different skin colors, confronting the changes (or lack thereof) in the desegregating south.
A video of Dawnica’s read aloud is posted on the PS 87 website: https://site.ps87.info/
For those who would like to read it themselves, copies are available to borrow from the New York Public Library, or to purchase from neighborhood and online booksellers.
As mentioned previously, the featured titles for the Family Book Club will be picture books that take on topics of race, equity and inclusion – issues that we hope will promote a lot of discussion around the dinner table, as well as in our meetings.
The books will be able to speak to the majority of our students, but will be most accessible to 1st-5th graders.
All participants – including parents – should read or listen to the book before coming to the book club meeting on Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m.

Dear PS 87 Families,
Although this is not a normal year, we want to make your child(ren)’s education as enjoyable as possible. We are organizing a Pajama Day and Drive on:
- Tuesday, March 2 for Cohort A
- Friday, March 5 for Cohort B and Full Remote
We are collecting new pajamas for The Pajama Program, an organization that provides pajamas and books to children in need. If you would like to donate a new pair of pajamas, there will be collection bags at each entrance of the school on Tuesday and Friday of next week.
We are really hoping you donate and are looking forward to seeing your donations! The children in need of pajamas are very grateful and so are we!
PS 87 students can also wear pajamas on Tuesday or Friday, based on their cohort. Pajamas should be comfortable and appropriate. In-person students should wear shoes, not slippers to school. We are very happy for students to participate in Pajama Day!
Even though this year is a little different we are still trying to make it as normal and fun as possible!! We hope you enjoy Pajama Day and appreciate your cooperation.

PS 87 March Madness!
PS 87 will be holding our first ever March Madness Fun Run/Walk! Our goal is to get families outside and exercising together, all while raising some funds. Our fun run/walk will benefit the PA fundraising efforts, which provide our children and school with supplies, programs and technology needs.
Here’s how it works: You design the run/walk that suits your family best and pick the date, location and distance! Run a 10K, 5k or 1 mile challenge. Join with other families to form a team, or form your own individual family team and walk/run your race between March 1 and March 31st. Set a goal by picking the distance that’s right for you—10K, 5L or 1 mile. Our run/walk can be completed anywhere you’d like – either in NYC or outside the city. Suggested routes are below. Take photos of your team joining in on the fun and fitness! Once you’ve completed your race, email them to email@example.com so we can post them on the PS 87 website.
Go to the PS 87 website and look for the fun run/walk sign-up. Or click here to sign up. There is a fee of $20 for adults. Children are free. When you register, only register the adults on your team! You will be charged for every registrant so do not officially register your children unless you want to make the additional donation to the PA. If this is not in your budget, but you still want to walk, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
After registering, there is a printable bib for you to wear and save. Once you have completed your race, register your time on your run/walk page. Visit the PS 87 Store at https://ps87store.itemorder.com/sale and shop for matching PS 87 shirts for your group!
Finally, look out for a super fun kick-off! This week, the PA will be giving out bags of goodies to any student who wants one. The bags will be filled with donations Flying Tiger generously provided before they closed. Pick up your bag on Tuesday, March 2 or Wednesday, March 3 at pick-up, at the front door, big yard or outside the K-yard.
- 10k: big loop in Central Park
- 5k: 2 bridle path Reservoir loops-Central Park
- Central Park Reservoir loop is 1.5 miles
- Lower Central Park loop is 1.7 miles
- 20 blocks = 1 mile (have the kids plot out a walk/run)
- Riverside Park has many options but to get you started, the path along the Hudson River, from 72nd to 158th street is 4 mi
Wellness in the School Family Workshops
The next workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 10 from 4-5 p.m. Each class will have a different nutrition lesson and a simple, accessible recipe to make together. The theme, recipe, and shopping list will be provided in advance along with the Zoom link.
If you’d like to purchase a child-friendly knife for this class and/or future workshops, we recommend lettuce knives or child friendly nylon serrated knives which can be found online, at Bed, Bath and Beyond and local gourmet food stores.
Dual Language Spanish Enrichment Parent Info Session
The Dual Language community met on Wednesday with Sras. Erika Greenblat and Jacqueline Morison to discuss the start of Spanish enrichment.
