  • 1/13/21 minutes 
  • Sara and Carrie, first and second motion to approve minutes

III. Admin and Committee Chair Updates 

a) Administration (Monica) 

  • Starting to get enrichment programs up and running
    • Dual language – info session coming up, sent a letter to families
      • Starting in March
    • Center for Architecture for 2nd grade
      • Bags in the lobby for fully remote kids
    • Working on NDI for Kindergarten and 1st grade
    • Symphony Space for 3rd grade
    • Working on other grades
  • 5th grade parents should know that MS deadline has been extended to Feb 23rd 
  • Pre-K parents- need to apply for K at PS87, submit paperwork 
  • Looking to add another section of K next year, may have space and personnel since so many families have left the school
  • If anyone is traveling, do not forget about the quarantine rules (10 day quarantine)
    • Our goal is to stay open and not shut for 10 days
    • There were more than 2 unrelated cases when school closed last time
  • If we start to see that cohort A and B days are uneven, we will look to even it out later in the year
  • Parent teacher conferences are March 4th- ½ day
    • Sign-ups will happen week after break
  • Admin office hours will be the week we return from the break, Monica will send out dates and times 

b) Presidents (Angie) 

  • Afterschool update (Stacy)
    • First committee meeting today
      • Reached out to parents to see who wants to support committee
        • encouraging and enthusiastic parents who want to help
      • Three options
        • Business as usual
        • Subsidiary
        • 3rd party 
      • Moving toward a vote on this at next exec meeting
      • Meeting weekly at 6pm if you want to join committee
      • Contact Stacy if interested
  • Fundraising committee (Lora)
    • needs help with Spring fundraiser
  • SLT election
  • Jill Rackmill and Kristen Meister are new SLT reps
  • Anyone can attend SLT meetings
    • Angie will put zoom info in BPN moving forward

c) Fundraising (Lora)

  • March madness walk/run to raise money for PS87
  • Spring fundraiser is coming together, need help 

d) Treasurers (Kim) 

See Appendix for details

  • Will have a budget vote with revised numbers soon
  • What is galaxy? 
    • It pays for Boost Up, IT support, Monica’s budget, etc.
  • Have raised about $200K so far this year
    • Family giving
    • Charleston wrap 
    • BPN ads
  • Expenses
    • PPE and plexi-glass 
    • Supplies for kids in Sept
    • Teachers’ supply budgets
    • Fundraising
    • Enrichment
    • Overhead and back office expenses (includes After school termination costs)
    • Teacher appreciation gifts
  • $21K surplus
  • About $1 million in reserves
  • Question about year to year view (Jan 2020 to Jan 2021) 
    • Kim can provide at the next meeting

e) Wellness (Natalya) 

  • Wellness in the Schools
    • Feb 24th starting virtual cooking workshop for families
    • Will email recipes and ingredients before
    • Will email a schedule
  • Organizer of group called Keep NYC Schools Open 
    • Want to fully reopen schools 5 days a week in-person as soon as possible

f) Community Affairs (Jill) 

  • Reminder that elected officials are listed on PS87 website
  • CEC is looking for more people to run 
  • Mayoral primary 
    • familiarize yourself with the candidates

g) Gear (Michael)

  • Shop at the school store!
  • Ongoing efforts to add more the store
  • Orders are still coming in
  • WIll be contacted when your orders are available at Big Frog for pickup

h) 5th Grade (Robin)

  • Fifth grade deadline extended until 2/23
  • Process was incredibly frustrating this year
  • Fifth grade graduation and yearbook, email Robin


  • Joan Robinson presented a letter to elected officials about need for full-time school in the fall; shared link to letter in the chat
  • Jill provided context for situation at PS 87
    • Spoke to D3 superintendent today
      • NYC was one of the few large districts to open at all 
      • 70% of families chose blended at PS87
      • 35% of PS87 teachers are remote 
      • There are schools that are under enrolled in District 3 that have kids go 5 days a week because only 30% of families are sending their kids to school
      • PS 87 has a tiny bit of extra space, we do not have the teachers to have more kids in the building
      • What is happening with teacher hiring? 
        • Trying but have a staffing crunch
        • Pre-K subs were hired but didn’t work out because they were so green
      • Apply pressure to the mayor’s office and Cuomo regarding funding 
  • Natalya believes administrators in other schools have come up with options to provide teaching in bigger spaces
