Join the Parents Association Board!
The PA Board decided to hold off on board elections until the fall to get a better sense of what the new school year and student population would look like.
We are holding our first General PA Meeting on September 29. We are currently seeking parents to fill a number of executive board positions. If you are interested in running for office, please reach out to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’d be happy to answer any of your questions.
Being on the PA Board is a great way to get involved and see the inner workings of the school. It’s also a chance to build stronger community ties. It’s incredibly rewarding to see ideas come to life for our school and our children. Consider running!
You can also visit our website to fill out the form if any of the positions interest you. Election Ballot Bios

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer our survey. We will meet via Zoom in the evenings until we can meet in person. Stay tuned and check Backpack News for dates, times and locations.
Update from the Culture and Community Committee
National Hispanic Heritage Month (in Spanish: Mes Nacional de la Herencia Hispana) the month between September 15 to October 15 in the United States, designated to recognize the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans on the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. This, and every month, is an opportune time to honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans and to support those following in their footsteps.
Thanks to Jimena Pinto-Kroujiline, mom of Mikhail and Sofia, representing the Dual Language Committee. There was a lovely gathering last Friday on the lawn across from the Diana Ross Playground. It was an incredible evening outside with lots of chatting and catching up.
Special thanks to Bea Yang and the many volunteers who organized the All School Welcome on Friday September 17. The kids were so happy to leave with some goodies. When they are happy, we are too. : )
Lastly thanks to Erica DePiero, who is spearheading Harvest Fest. It’s going to be a great time! Looking forward to seeing everyone in their costumes.
Due to the construction starting outside of our school yard today (see email from Jennifer Stark and message below), we will be rescheduling our International Dinner Dance, which was scheduled to take place in the big yard this coming Friday, October 1.
In the next couple of weeks, we will be hosting a compilation virtual music show.
We are also looking forward to spending time together as a community as much as possible, in person, surrounded by family, friends, and good laughs. We’ll keep you posted about upcoming dates. If any of you like to dance or sing, let us know. At PS 87, we have many parents and kids who love enjoying music together. We’re hoping to host a karaoke night and other fun events throughout the school year.

Save the Date! Harvest Fest is Back!
PS 87’s Harvest Fest will be held during the afternoon of Saturday, Oct 23 from 1-5pm. This annual fall tradition will take place outside this year on West 77th Street and the Big Yard. We’ll come together and celebrate as a community with live music, arts, crafts, games, and a Halloween maze. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume!

Construction Update – Work to begin on 77th and 78th Streets
Below please find a letter from the NYC School Construction Authority’s External Affairs Manager, Joshua E. Adams:
Dear Neighbors and Parents of P.S. 087 – The William T. Sherman School:
The New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) wishes to notify you about upcoming work for the M087 building.
This project will be for reduced pressure zone work to install a new water line for the school and will begin on Monday at 4:00 p.m.
This work will be conducted on 77th Street and 78th Street. The streets will be open for thru traffic and a flag man or safety cones will be in place during street work hours.
Due to the nature of this work and for the safety of the students, all activities must take place after normal school hours. The street work is scheduled to be completed in October 2021.
Weather permitting, most construction work will take place on weekdays between the hours of 4-10 p.m., and on weekends and school holidays between 8 a.m.-4 p.m..
While this work will generate noise, the SCA will strive to minimize the noise impact to you and your neighbors.
During school closure and on holidays, work will be completed during normal construction hours. During the regular school session, work will be completed after normal school hours.
We regret this disturbance to the community but with your cooperation, we hope to finish this project earlier than anticipated.
If you have any questions or need further information, please call me at (718) 472-8557.
