Title: Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine

Author: Laurie Wallmark

Illustrator: April Chu

Read by Dawnica Conyette

If you’d like to read the book yourself, the book is also available on Epic! and is available to borrow from the NewYork Public Library. Check out our school website for a video of Dawnica reading the book.

Ada Lovelace is recognized as the designer of the first computer program for her work back in the 1800s. During a time that we usually think of as the olden-days of horse and buggies, and no flush toilets, Ada Lovelace, an amazing mathematician, foresaw a time when computers would help design flying machines (airplanes didn’t exist yet), compose music, make art, play games and help with schoolwork. She had a vision for the future that is still coming true.

PA Meeting Elections – December 8

We have two positions to be filled at this week’s General PA Meeting. Please join us to vote! The first is for a position on the School Leadership Team (SLT).  SLT is a group of teachers, administration and parents who develop educational policies for the school.  Currently we have three candidates running for the open chair.  In addition to the open SLT role, we are also going to vote for the Auction Chair.  Sarah Hansen, our current fundraising chair, has agreed to take on auction as well. Attached is her bio.  She is currently running unopposed but if you would like to join her, or run separately for Auction Chair, please email  Please read their bios here and join us for the vote on December 8!

Parent Get Together – Thursday December 9

Dear Parents (of all grades),

As we reach the end of 2021 we would like to invite you to join us for a drink and a snack at Da Capo on Thursday, December 9, at 6:30 p.m. They have inside and outside seating, however it looks like it is going to be a cold night so bring along a warm coat if you prefer to sit outside.

If you are planning to join (or are a maybe), please RSVP here.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Class Size Petition

The City Council is about to vote on legislation to lower class sizes. We have been able to reduce class sizes this year because the Parents Association agreed to fund cluster teachers. This is not always how it works. We usually have between 28 and 32 children in a class. Signing this petition could help keep class sizes small which is integral to student achievement and more individualized learning. For the first time in decades, we have a significant amount of federal and state education aid that could be used to hire staff and secure space to lower class sizes in all schools – not only our school. Please go to to learn more and sign the petition.

Family Giving Campaign – Reminder

If you haven’t already donated, please click here to make your contribution or here to contribute monthly.  We’re asking every family to contribute the $960 that the Parents Association spends per student each year, or more if you can, but we’ll be grateful for whatever you can afford, even just $1 a month.  And if your family is in need this year and cannot contribute, please reach out to the PA or to Jennifer Stark, the school’s Parent Coordinator.  The PA is here to help ensure that every child has the same special PS 87 experience.

Thank you,

Shira Hudson and Ross Goldstein
