This Week – Lost and Found
Can’t find that new water bottle? Swear your kid had a light jacket? Is your child’s homework folder MIA? It’s probably in the lost and found! Currently the lost and found is brimming with lost items—sweatshirts, jackets, hats, water bottles, folders, lunch boxes. etc. In order to help you find your items, we will be rolling out the lost and found to various locations during drop off and pick-up today through Wednesday. Please stop by and take a quick look for your child’s belongings.
Family Giving Campaign
PS 87 is such a special school and it takes volunteer efforts and support from our community to keep up the amazing offerings that benefit all of our families. State and city budgets do not come close to covering all that our students, teachers and staff need to succeed. Our Family Giving drive pays for kindergarten teaching assistants, our librarian, computer lab, math & literacy intervention programs, recess coaches, the national dance institute and more! Thanks to your generous donations, we are able to provide essential programs, supplies and enrichment experiences not funded by the NYC Department of Education.
We’re asking every family to contribute the $960 that the PA spends per student each year, or more if you can, but we’ll be grateful for whatever you can afford, even just $1 a month. And if this year your family is in need and cannot contribute, please reach out to the PA or to Jennifer Stark, the school’s Parent Coordinator. The PA is here to help ensure that every child has the same special PS 87 experience.

Family Book Club is Back!
Join us for a Family Book Club Discussion on Monday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m. Zoom link to follow.
Title: Ada Byron Lovelace and the Thinking Machine
Author: Laurie Wallmark
Illustrator: April Chu
Read by Dawnica Conyette
Link to recording: https://site.ps87.info/family-book-club/
If you’d like to read the book yourself, the book is also available on Epic! and is available to borrow from the NewYork Public Library. Check out our school website site.ps87.info for a video of Dawnica reading the book.
Ada Lovelace is recognized as the designer of the first computer program for her work back in the 1800s. During a time that we usually think of as the olden-days of horse and buggies, and no flush toilets, Ada Lovelace, an amazing mathematician, foresaw a time when computers would help design flying machines (airplanes didn’t exist yet), compose music, make art, play games and help with schoolwork. She had a vision for the future that is still coming true.
December 8 PA Meeting Elections
We have two positions to be filled at the upcoming General PA Meeting. Please join us to vote! The first is for a position on the School Leadership Team (SLT). SLT is a group of teachers, administration and parents who develop educational policies for the school. Currently we have three candidates running for the open chair. In addition to the open SLT role, we are also going to vote for the Auction Chair. Sarah Hansen, our current fundraising chair, has agreed to take on auction as well. Attached is her bio. She is currently running unopposed but if you would like to join her, or run separately for Auction Chair, please email email@example.com. Please read their bios here and join us for the vote on December 8!
Final Days – WCAH Annual Turkey (and Cards) Drive!
PS 87 is continuing our tradition of supporting the Westside Campaign Against Hunger to help feed those in need this Thanksgiving. Hunger has hit our community hard these past few years and a $27 donation will provide a family with a holiday meal. Our goal is to have as many of our families as possible donate turkeys to others in the community to help make the holiday special.
In addition, homemade Thanksgiving cards from our students were a big hit last year, so we’d like to include them to be distributed along with the turkeys. Cards may be dropped off with your child’s classroom teacher.
The final day for turkey donations and homemade cards is Tuesday, November 23.
Please join our school family in supporting other families by scanning the QR code. This year, PS 87 has its own Turkey Drive fundraising page!

DEI Task Force – Update and Next Meeting on Dec 1
As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, we want to share gratitude for our community! The DEI Task Force exists to build community and strengthen our PS 87 motto of “One Family Under the Sun”. With that in mind, please let us know of any cultural celebrations that are important to your family, so we can help spread the joy!
For anyone interested in more information, the next DEI Task Force meeting is next Wednesday, December 1 at 3 p.m. Check the school calendar for zoom information.
Thank you again for all the feedback so far, and please do continue to reach out. Our email address is: DEITaskForce@ps87.info
