School Leadership Team (SLT)

The School Leadership Team is a collaborative team of parents, teachers, staff and the principal that is mandated by state law to play a significant role as an advisory panel in representing the school community. Elected every two years, the SLT helps create structures for school-based decision-making, develops school-based educational policies and ensures resources are aligned to implement those policies. The SLT writes and reviews the school’s Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP).

SLT members:
According to the Chancellor’s Regulations, elementary school SLTs must include as mandatory members: the school principal, the PA president (or designated co-president), the UFT chapter leader, and an equal number of parents and staff. SLTs may elect to include representatives from community-based organizations.

SLTs’ roles in schools:
The core responsibility of each SLT is to develop the school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP) that is aligned with the school-based budget. SLTs are strongly encouraged to solicit input from various school community constituencies in order to ensure that all voices are heard regarding the needs of students. Functioning in a collaborative manner, SLTs also help to evaluate the effectiveness of the school’s educational programs and their impact on student achievement. SLTs receive support and guidance as needed from their District Leadership Teams.

SLT’s Goals at PS 87:
(1) Early intervention in ELA
(2) Greater collaboration among teachers to achieve higher levels in Math
(3) Improving the level of Communication among all constituencies
(4) Launching the “Respect for All” initiative through a variety of new programs for students, staff and parents.

How do I join PS 87’s SLT?
Parent members of PS 87’s SLT are nominated by the Parents Association Executive Board and elected by parents as part of the PA General Elections.

Relevant Legislation:
Under State Education Law, Section 2590, all New York City public schools are required to establish School Leadership Teams. SLTs must comply with the current Chancellor’s Regulation A–655.

Meetings are held monthly. The meeting date, time and location are posted on the board in the school office, in Backpack News and on the web calendar. All parents are invited to attend SLT meetings, whether they are members of the SLT or not.
